Abstract

Etiquette, civility and appropriate behaviour in the workplace represent the foundation of successful organizations. Their antonyms reflect an increasing degree of concern that might escalate into a toxic workplace environment if left unaddressed accordingly and timely. The deviant/dysfunctional behaviour and incivility are relatively well researched regarding their serious consequences at individual and organizational levels. On the other hand, etiquette is poorly studied and often overlooked, in part because its foundation is grounded in unwritten, common sense rules. We provide herein examples of commonly inappropriate etiquette lapses observed to exist in the workplace and solutions that managers might consider in their efforts to address them. The uniqueness of our examples is represented by their very basic profile as human intercommunications or by their repetitive, discomfort-inducing nature. As only few etiquette challenges are subject to investigational research, our manuscript opens the field to motivate such analysis given the multilayered impacts they carry within organizations.
